TACC-Southeast Hosts Delegation from Suleyman Demirel University

TACC-Southeast was proud to host a delegation from Suleyman Demirel University in Isparta, Turkey, this past month. The delegation, including SDU President Hasan Ibicioglu and a variety of SDU administrators and professors, came to Atlanta as part of a tour of the greater Eastern and Southeastern United States!

While in Atlanta, the delegation had formal meetings with officials from both Clayton State University (CSU) and Kennesaw State University (KSU) on Friday, November 16th 2012.

Clayton State University Visit

The first official meeting took place in the morning at Clayton State University in Morrow, Georgia. President Ibicioglu, his group, and TACC officials met with CSU's Provost & Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Micheal Crafton, over beverages and snacks.

During this meeting, President Ibicioglu and Provost Crafton introduced each other to the other's university, delineated common, shared goals, and the hopes for mutual collaborations. For the potential between Turkish and American institutions, especially universities, is great considering the great diversity and pluralism found in both countries. The possibility of both faculty and student exchanges were discussed and a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) contract was signed.

Kennesaw State University Visit

After the meeting with Dr. Crafton, the delegation made its way north of the city to Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia for an afternoon meeting with KSU's Provost & Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Ken Harmon.

The venue at Kennesaw State University was spectacular as the group was hosted in the Convocation Center in a wonderful room overlooking the university's basketball arena! It truly gave the delegation a taste of the KSU experience.

During the course of this meeting, President Ibicioglu again offered an invitation for the Provost to visit Suleyman Demirel University in Isparta, Turkey, and he and Dr. Harmon discussed similarities between the U.S. & Turkey and how KSU and SDU can work together in the future. "International relationships," stated Provost Harmon, "are personal."

Dinner at Our Midtown Office

The substantive daytime meetings were followed by a dinner at TACC-Southeast's Midtown (Headquarters) Office, attended by officials from TACC-Southeast, Istanbul Center, Emory University, Suleyman Demirel University, and the Georgia State Senate. Senator Donzella James (D-GA) addressed all gathered, expressing her great love for Turkey and past experiences traveling there in addition to the paramount importance of the Turkish-American relationship.

Having already met President Ibicioglu in Turkey this past  summer, Senators Donzella James, Miriam Paris, and Valencia  Seay were pleased to reunite with him, accordingly.

In fact, the group was so happy to be back together that  President Ibicioglu even treated the group to an impromptu a  capella vocal performance!

The Turkish American Chamber of Commerce of the Southeast  United States was honored to have been able to host President  Hasan Ibicioglu and his contingent. For bringing Turks and  Americans together, especially in regards to business,  commerce, and education, is our ultimate goal.
